What it costs is decided twice.

Once when you pick a school, and again every week after that.

Same licence, 24 schools

$22,508 to $48,057.

Nobody writes that cheque. It is about $3,441 a month for six months to a year.

80 hours: $30,965. 110 hours: $42,145. $11,180, decided by how the training goes.

Fly twice a week, not twice a month. Know the ground material before you turn up — otherwise you cover it in the aeroplane at $300 an hour.

What you need before the first lesson

No website shows this. Coastal Pacific Aviation wants $5,000 before you fly. 2 want nothing.

Some is money gone. Some is a deposit that credits against your flying. Ask which.

What moves the number

How often you fly
Skills fade between lessons. Fly twice a month and you pay to relearn them.
Wet or dry
A $195 dry rate is dearer than a $240 wet one. Fuel is $43–55 on top. We normalise it.
What is bundled
One school quotes $10,950 and bills $4,320 of supplies separately. Another quotes $20,140 with everything in.

If you are doing this for a living

It reaches real money. There is a trough first.

Class 4 instructor$25–30/hyour first flying job, after about $80,000 of training
Class 1 instructor$80–90/hseveral years and a few thousand hours later
Regional first officer$42–80kthe years people leave out of the story
Regional captain$76–150ktwo to six years after joining
Air Canada captain$190–305kusually ten years from your first lesson

Instructing pays badly, for two to four years. Thousands get through it every year — almost always the ones who knew it was coming and planned for it.

Six questions, then the real total at every school that fits.
